Trust Your Gut

Why gut health is the foundation of whole-body wellness.

Certified Nutrition and Gut Health Coach Brandy Price believes better health begins in the gut. As the founder of Beyond the Plate, she helps women move beyond fad diets to uncover the root causes of fatigue, inflammation, hormone imbalances, and digestive issues.

Price shares practical, science-backed strategies for nourishing the microbiome and explains how small, sustainable changes can transform overall wellness from the inside out.

How does a healthy gut influence your body's health?

Think of your gut lining as a security checkpoint. Its job is to let the good stuff like nutrients through and keep everything else in the tube where it belongs. When that checkpoint is doing its job, digestion is quiet, your immune system is not on constant alert, and the bacteria in your gut are producing compounds that lower inflammation and support neurotransmitter production.

When it’s not, things leak through that were never meant to. Your immune system responds with inflammation. Chronic low-grade inflammation is a known contributor to fatigue, joint pain, skin flares, low mood, and foggy thinking. It’s one system. We just experience it as a dozen unrelated complaints.

How often are clients surprised to learn their symptoms may be connected to their gut?

Almost every time. And the reaction is usually relief because she has been carrying around this collection of symptoms that felt random, and random is frightening. The moment she understands that her bloating, exhaustion, and foggy thinking might all be speaking the same language, something shifts. It stops feeling like her body is falling apart in six directions and starts feeling like there is one thread to pull. That conversation is often the single most valuable thing that happens in our first meeting.

What lifestyle habits have the biggest impact on gut health?

Sleep and stress. Chronic stress puts your body in fight or flight, and digestion is the first system your body powers down when it thinks you’re in danger. Your body cannot tell the difference between an actual emergency and a Tuesday, so if you are living at a low simmer of stress, your digestion is running at half power all day.

Poor sleep shifts your cortisol curve, disrupts your microbiome, and increases inflammation. You cannot out-eat a nervous system that never gets to stand down.

The practical version: walk after meals, breathe before you eat instead of inhaling lunch over your keyboard, and protect your sleep like it's a health intervention. Because it is one.

If readers only made three changes to improve their gut health, what would you recommend?

  1. Add protein and fiber to breakfast. It sets your blood sugar and your energy for the entire day, and it’s the single change that gives people the fastest noticeable result.
  2. Eat more kinds of plants. Do not count servings, count varieties. Different vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, and herbs across the week. Aim for 30 different plants in a week and treat it like a scavenger hunt instead of a rule.
  3. Take ten minutes to walk after your largest meal. It supports motility, blunts the blood sugar spike, and gives your nervous system a chance to shift into a state where digestion actually works.
