Two Kids’ Holiday Crafts

With holidays coming up, Kidcreate Studio wanted to share a couple festive crafts to try at home with the kids.

Brand new to West Bloomfield, Kidcreate Studio (located at 4297 Orchard Lake Rd in West Bloomfield) specializes in children’s art classes, camps and art-themed birthday parties. At Kidcreate Studio, your child will create fridge-worthy masterpieces, learn art concepts and experiment with many different art materials. The curriculum is tailored to match the developmental needs of children at different ages as they offer fast-moving classes for high energy toddlers, preschool classes that encourage their growing independence and school-aged classes that encourage creativity.

With the holiday season approaching, Kidcreate Studio wanted to share a couple festive children’s crafts to try at home: Holiday Ornaments and Holiday Slime. Make sure to post a picture of the completed project or even a video of your in-home "TadaTime" to celebrate a job well done with the rest of the Kidcreate community! Tag Kidcreate in your post on Facebook or Instagram and use the hashtag #kidcreatetada to share your masterpiece!

Holiday Ornaments

Required Materials:

• Light air dry clay (golf ball-sized piece)

• 4x4 foam in black, white, green and orange (1 of each color)

• Large craft stick

• Bio paint in white and red

• Mini markers

• Ornament hooks (2)

• Small paper plate

• Paint Brush

• Apron

• Cleaning supplies

• Scissors

• School glue

• Pencil

Directions:

North Pole Sign

1. Begin by painting your craft stick with white bio paint.

2. Use your paintbrush to add some stripes with red bio paint.

3. Take your green foam, and cut off a small piece to save for later.

4. Fold the rest of the green foam in half (long ways), then cut out two symmetrical arrows.

5. Use a marker to write “North Pole” on one side of one arrow.

6. Lengthen out the end of one ornament hook, then hook the small end just slightly over the bottom of the other green arrow.

7. Add some school glue, then create a “sandwich” by laying all the remaining pieces on top (paint-side-up stick, more school glue, then North Pole arrow) .

Clay Snowman

1. Begin by warming up your clay, so it becomes easier to work with.

2. Roll your clay into a nice, smooth ball, then flatten it into a thick pancake.

3. Use your fingers like erasers to smooth out any bumps or cracks.

4. Use the back of your paintbrush to punch a hole near the top of your circle for a hook.

5. Use your paintbrush to paint the snowman white. If needed, use the back of your paintbrush to redefine the hole again.

6. Use scissors to cut a long carrot nose from the remaining orange foam.

7. Use the black scraps to cut out 8 to 10 pieces of coal (to be used for eyes and mouth).

8. Use dots of school glue to add the snowman’s eyes and smile.

9. Allow your snowman to dry for 2-3 days until it becomes hard. Do not add the ornament hook

until the snowman is fully dry!

8. Once finished, it’s TadaTime! We celebrate our hard work and amazing art by saying “Tada!”

Holiday Slime

Required Materials:

• Liquid starch, 3 oz in ziploc bag

• School glue, 3 oz white or clear

• Straw (1/2)

• Bio paint in red and green

• Glitter in red, green, silver or gold

• 2 mix-in options (beads, sequins, or sprinkles)

• Apron

• Mixing bowl

• Cleaning supplies

Directions:

1. NOTE: If you cover your work space with paper, make sure not to set the

slime down onto the paper. It may stick and tear the paper! Keep it in the

bowl or in your hands at all times.

2. Begin by pouring your school glue into a large mixing bowl.

3. Add in some liquid starch slowly, stirring with your fingers as you go.

4. Feel the slime begin to form! If it is still really sticky, add in a little more liquid

starch.

5. The more you play with your silly putty, the less sticky it becomes.

6. To add color, choose which color(s) you would like your slime to be. Add in a

little paint, and mix thoroughly. If you want to create both red and green slime,

divide your slime in half, then mix some of each color separately!

7. Try blowing a bubble in your slime by placing the straw in your folded up silly

putty, then exhaling into your straw.

8. If you wish, add in your mix-ins to create the textured slime of your dreams.

9. When it’s time to put the slime away, seal it in a plastic bag. (Making a mess is

the best, but we only play with our slime when and where our grownups allow us!).

10. Once finished, it’s TadaTime! We celebrate our hard work and amazing art by

saying “Tada!”
