Up close with SPENGA

South Dayton’s newest 'spin, strength, and yoga' fitness studio concept

It’s easy to get stuck in a boring, monotonous workout routine because choosing from a variety of exercise programs can just feel so daunting. Do you find yourself to be more of a spin fanatic, or how about a yoga guru? Are you more into weight training, or the fast pace of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) instead?

Imagine if you didn’t have to choose a favorite workout. What if you could do more than one kind of exercise routine in a single 60 minute session? Enter SPENGA, the only fitness studio of its kind in the Dayton area has found a home in Centerville. It's a play on the words, ‘spin,’ ‘strength,’ and ‘yoga.’

Owner Mike Morgan was drawn to the SPENGA model for its variety of exercises, and the tight-knit community feel.

“Providing an opportunity for clients to build both a physical and mental strength was so important to me,” shared Morgan. “I also wanted the studio to have a strong community feel - for those who exercise at SPENGA to feel as if they are a part of something bigger than themselves.”

SPENGA blends three essential areas of fitness for creating one incredibly efficient, fast paced, and fun workout. With a routine layout of 20 minutes each for spinning, circuit-style HIIT strength training, and yoga, class participants don’t have time to get bored, mentally or physically. Not only is the genre of exercise changing every 20 minutes, but you move around the gym, feeling as if you’re entering three separate studios, each with its own individual look and feel.

“We currently offer five to six classes a day, and have ten SPENGA-certified instructors on staff,” noted Katy Minnick, General Manager.

Because a SPENGA workout delivers cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility training in every session, the body is not only physically tested throughout, but the rapidly changing focus also keeps participants on their toes. It can be easy to zone out on a treadmill or even doing the same weight lifting routine day after day, but SPENGA workouts are high-energy and constantly evolving.

Interestingly enough, the first thing to notice upon entering the brand new SPENGA studio - which opened at the end of last year - isn’t the incredible gym in the back of the building with rows upon rows of top-of-the-line weights and equipment, the impressive cycle studio, nor the calming yoga studio. It’s actually this tranquil essential oil blend that leaves clients feeling as if they walked into a spa, not a workout facility.

Minnick added that the Centerville SPENGA has its own unique scent. This soothing blend of lavender, eucalyptus, and lemongrass provides a serene start and finish to the workout. So even though a SPENGA fitness routine is effective and intense, you leave your workout feeling relaxed, grounded, and ready to take on the rest of your day.

SPENGA, is a play on the words ‘spin,’ ‘strength,’ and ‘yoga.’ Located in Centerville at the new Yankee Station on St. Rt. 725, classes are currently offered six days of the week at a variety of time slots to accommodate busy and ever-changing schedules. They can be booked on an individual basis, or as a prepaid package.

PART 1, SPIN: Each SPENGA class begins with 20 minutes of an energizing, DJ-inspired beat-bumping spin workout. The lights are lowered while the volume is elevated. This cardio workout gets your heart-rate up and body warmed for the exercises to come. The instructor will walk you through the exercises, and explain the unique SPENGA ‘Spin Power Training System.’

PART 2, STRENGTH: The next phase of the class works your muscles throughout a continuous 20 minute circuit-style HIIT strength class. Once again, the instructor will guide participants through exercises that change daily, but if you can’t hear the instructions or are still catching your breath, there are video monitors that will show you what to do and also count down your time.

PART 3, YOGA: Finally, just when you feel as if you’ve been pushed to your limit with strength, the final 20 minutes are dedicated to a beyond calming yoga session. You’ll end your workout with a combination of static, flowing, and repetitive movements that allow the body to recover, stretch and increase flexibility.
