The pop of a new can being opened, the smell of new Penns, and the soft clapping of spectators... Who wants to play tennis? Most kids haven’t ever been asked this before. Historically, there have only been few (and expensive) chances to compete in tennis, and hardly any on a team, before high school.
Utah Youth Tennis is working to change that by providing affordable tennis to all youth. In St. George, they offer programs for 6th-9th graders of all skill levels, where they can play on a team, learn skills of the game, and compete with players at a similar level. Whether kids are already involved in tennis and looking for more match play, or want to try something completely new, UYT has a place for everyone.
“Tennis Begins With Love.” A well-loved tennis pun, and also a Valentine’s camp theme for St. George UYT players. Last February, 6th-9th graders spent hours learning and progressing in their tennis skills, and then finished the day writing valentines for people in retirement and assisted living centers. They donated old tennis balls to these centers for the elderly to use in exercises or on the bottom of walkers. The kids didn’t want to stop writing valentines, and there’s no doubt that our elderly friends loved receiving all the letters (complete with a few “6-7” jokes) as well.
Recently, UYT players ages 12-14 were asked about their experiences playing in the league. Here are a few of their responses:
“Don’t make it stressful- that takes the fun out of it.”
“There’s no such thing as failure, just learning.”
“You don’t have to be perfect to do what you have fun doing.”
Wait, are they talking about life or tennis? They were asked about tennis, but their answers reflect important lifelong perspectives. As these players strive to improve their game, they are simultaneously growing into healthier, more connected people, who will make more positive impacts on their communities. Because community, like tennis, begins with love.
