Courtney Major, owner, and artist of Cocostylz Artistry hair and makeup salon, may be modest in person and about her success, but the volume from her blowouts is anything but. There is a lot of volume, height, texture, and dimension. High-volume hair is so in this fall.

Cocostylz Artistry was created by Major a year and a half ago. Her nickname, “Coco,” inspired the name of her salon and “Artistry” because she is a true artist, a beauty artist. Coco specializes in dry cuts, extensions, wedding and special events, makeup, and hair.

At the age of 7, Coco was intrigued by beauty and had a knack for style. She would practice hair and makeup to the delight of her cousins and soon realized this was her passion. Initially, Coco thought she would do something in medicine, maybe becoming an anesthesiologist. She knew she wanted to help people in a meaningful way with her choice of career. Styling and pampering were a way of helping others feel confident and satisfied in themselves and their looks.

“My passion is deeply rooted in helping people, whether medicine or hair. I love empowering people,” said Coco as I sat in the cozy salon chair surrounded by the calm spa atmosphere. The salon is peaceful, with rooms for one or two, which is perfect for direct attention. There’s no hustle or bustle from a noisy salon that can be overcrowded and impersonal. It’s one-on-one and relaxing.

Inspired by natural elements, Coco uses only natural products without synthetic ingredients. Synthetic components can create a barrier between the nutrients the hair needs and the hair itself. Without the added fuss of silicon and other damaging ingredients, the hair can receive the treatment, moisture, and healthy features to make it beautiful.

Coco is inviting, and her salon is luxurious and charming. There are luxury styling products, chocolates to savor, and your choice of beverage: wine, coffee, or water. The double mirrors allow you to take a look and a double look.

Coco, only 26, has gone on from her Aveda Institute education in Franklin to achieve so much through her training. While studying at Aveda before graduation, Coco started to look for a job post-grad. This ambitious student was ready for the next step and didn’t want to wait. She reached out to celebrity hairstylist Jon Reyman through Instagram. He flew her out to Los Angeles to see her work firsthand. After watching her esthetics, he was incredibly impressed. She did better work than many of his existing stylists! She took on an apprenticeship with Reyman for nearly a year. Reyman, throwing away Coco’s old sheers, gifted her his own personal ones. She is definitely “on a good journey,” as she puts it.

From LA, it was on to New York for New York Fashion Week in 2018. Coco worked behind the scenes with other artists for one of the world's most notable fashion weeks. She helped fashion designers complete the art and look they wanted, sometimes working with 7 to 8 other stylists at the same time on the same model. It required teamwork, efficiency, talent, and speed. She met famous designers such as Elie Tahari, who inspired her to learn so much about beauty and skill. Coco's enthusiasm for her craft is just beaming from her spirit.

“I just love it! I could not have picked a better job,” said Coco while trimming and texturing my hair for a new and trendier look. She feels like a trusted friend, open and friendly, and happy to answer all my questions. She wears her hair slicked back in a ponytail full of volume and curls, showing off the sleek style that is trending everywhere now.

Coco has an eye for detail, ambition, and eagerness to her. She would love to open her own full-service salon. She also wants to be the first salon available for service at the airport. Coco asks, “There are nail salons; why not a blowout salon?” You may need a blowout in between or after flights. Coco is a go-getter and doesn’t shy away from the hard work it takes to create an up-and-coming business. She takes business classes and networks as well to perfect her company. She would love to open her next location.

This September is improvement month, and Coco is ready to make you shine and help you create a refreshing new look that you are proud to show off. Celebrate the milestones in your life, like retirement, a new baby, or graduation, and have her pair a brand-new look with your achievements.

Coco’s salon is located in Green Hills. You can check out her portfolio of designs on her website, Facebook page, or Instagram. She has blowout packages available. Mention this article, and you will receive a free blowout. I was blown away!
