2020 is finally over, and although many of us have been counting down the days for this moment, our readers agreed that there was some good that came out of the year and look forward to bringing these new habits with them into 2021 and beyond.

“I’d like to continue exercising into the new year mostly because 2020 has been so challenging. Much of what has happened this year was out of my control, but my fitness was the one thing I could actually hold the reins on. It kept me sane. As I look at 2021, I’m hoping the things I can’t control fall into place.”

“When my family was looking at homes, we were really drawn to this house because of the large yard and proximity to nature. When COVID hit, I found myself suddenly unemployed and wanted to try something new that would help me relax and refocus some of my energy and thoughts. Feeding the birds in our yard has done a great job of just that! I got my job back in April and am out there most mornings, and I will continue to do this for the rest of my life!”

“This year began with a career change and opening a pilates studio three weeks before the pandemic hit. Overnight, all of our lives changed more than anyone could have ever imagined. That’s when my friend sent me a life-changing podcast that allowed me to still enjoy this year. It spoke of a daily journal practice, writing out what you’re grateful for, positive affirmations for the day and what a day in your dream life may look like. I had nothing to lose since the entire world was shut down, so a routine was created and every morning started with five minutes to journal these thoughts. Almost everything I’ve written about has come true, and I know the rest is in the works!”

“COVID was a quick reminder for those of us who are health compromised just how important it is to keep up the fight and be proactive with our health, such as taking prescribed meds, exercising and losing those extra pounds, eating healthier and getting adequate sleep. It was also a reminder to always tell the people I care about how important they are to me because life is short, and if you don’t, it may be too late.”

“Our family loves our Oakland County Parks pass! The parks have been our sanctuary during the pandemic. We love to hike, run, ride our bikes and rollerblade through the trails. This summer, we kayaked, as well. Each season brings something new, and many trails offer educational experiences for my three children. It’s a habit that began just this year, and one that has been so beneficial for our overall health and mindset. We can’t wait to continue our time in the parks this winter, maybe snowshoeing or cross country skiing!”

“We've spent a lot of our time outside, and I've really enjoyed growing a vegetable garden and teaching my three young children about new vegetables and trying new foods. We love eating peas right off the vine as it brings back memories of gardening with my grandmother. I'm planning on continuing to garden with the kids, and I'm even thinking about planting a small fruit orchard.”
