Growing up near her grandparents’ dairy goat farm, Chelsea Combs gained a practical perspective on the natural world. That experience equipped her to teach her own children about the values of gardening and how the food web affects everything in life.
Hands-on farming was made difficult by living in a neighborhood, but after a chicken-keeping class in Austin, Chelsea and her husband, Patrick, decided to start their backyard brood. Now, the Combses assist others in constructing their perfect coops through Chicken Tenders ATX.
“I love helping families learn how to build a more sustainable world right in their own backyard,” says Chelsea. “Everyone can learn so much about nature and connecting with the earth by having a few chickens. It doesn’t have to be a whole lot of land and a farm.”
Chelsea occasionally brings chickens to schools to educate students on that aforementioned sustainability. She explains that chickens help with food waste, go hand-in-hand with composting, and reduce problematic insects.
This knowledge translates into her business, working with city dwellers to foster their farm-living dreams. With every coop project the Combses navigate, they show families what it takes to care for creatures who provide for us.
“An amazing part of my job is meeting the other chicken people of the world,” says Chelsea. “I must say, honestly, I’ve never met a ‘chicken person’ I didn’t like!”

“I love the idea of children understanding where their food comes from, both eggs and chickens. Although we don’t eat our chickens because they are our pets, the chicken comes from somewhere!”
