Advice, inspiration, and peace of mind from Houston's busiest people.

Gratitude may be one of the simplest ways to destress during uncertain times. Studies show that when people feel appreciated, they're more likely to stay engaged and feel connected to those around them. Showing gratitude can brighten someone's outlook, but it is often overlooked, even though it requires little time or effort. Even a small amount can go a long way toward boosting well-being. To see how this plays out in real life, we caught up with some of Houston's busiest people to learn what they're grateful for and how they weave it into their everyday routines.

What are you most grateful for in the city of Houston itself?

Every day, I feel grateful that my family and I get to live in a city where incredible art and culture are woven into the fabric of our lives—and truly matter to the people who live here. We at HGO live and breathe opera, but we also draw inspiration from all of Houston's extraordinary cultural institutions. 

Who or what do you find yourself most consistently grateful for right now?

My main source of gratitude is the people who live here, Houstonians themselves. From the moment my family and I arrived, this community has embraced us with genuine warmth. It's been so lovely to feel supported both professionally and as a parent, and that generosity reflects the spirit of philanthropy that sustains the world-class art we enjoy here.

Where does gratitude naturally fit in your day?

Expressing gratitude is a natural part of my day. Taking time to share my appreciation with those around me helps me stay centered and happier. Expressing a 'thank you'or more profound sentiment reminds me of what truly matters and what is important to me.

What are you most grateful for in the city of Houston itself?

I am genuinely grateful for the commitment Houstonians share in supporting our remarkable art institutions, such as the Houston Ballet. Houston's vibrant cultural scene makes it a dynamic and fulfilling place to live and work. As a Houston Ballet Guild member and one of the chairpersons at this year's Nutcracker Market, I have dedicated myself to supporting the art of ballet and sharing it with others.

What advice would you give to other busy Houstonians who want to practice gratitude but don't feel they have the time to do so? 

Carve out small moments for yourself each day. Begin with morning reflection in the quiet, setting the tone for the day. At night, jot one line of gratitude, whether a kindness, a moment, or a story. Starting small makes it easier to grow these self-care habits into lasting, meaningful routines.

What are you most grateful for in the city of Houston itself?

I am a transplant to our great city. The last nine years have shown me what wonderfully kind, generous, and friendly Houstonians are. I have been welcomed by strangers, asked to join groups and collaboratives, and treated with love wherever I go. The diversity of people, neighborhoods, and cultures is invigorating. I am always excited about what the city has to offer.

Who or what do you find yourself most consistently grateful for right now?

Currently, as I plan the city's largest art festival, I am grateful for the people I work alongside every day. The artists participating in the show are incredibly creative and inspiring. I'm extremely lucky to have the chance not only to experience their work firsthand, but also to share it with thousands of Houstonians.

What advice would you give to other busy Houstonians who want to practice gratitude but don't feel they have the time?

There is always time; you have to find it. Find something you do every day for 15 minutes, and replace it with a gratitude practice. I replaced morning screen time with gratitude journaling and meditation, which helps me mentally throughout the day and has been a complete game-changer.
