The ability to draw is essential, but capturing a true likeness is far more complex than simply copying facial features, hair color, or body shape. A successful portrait also reflects body language and presence - the way a person holds themselves, whether they are reserved or outgoing, quiet or expressive. Finding even a small glimpse of someone’s personality can make a portrait come alive.
I like to take my time and spend a couple of hours getting to know each client, especially when I am painting children. Meeting them in a familiar, relaxed setting allows them to feel comfortable and simply be themselves. I want to learn what they enjoy, what matters to them, and how they feel about being painted. That time together gives me the best chance of capturing images that reveal something genuine and help tell their story.
I consider the process of creating a portrait to be an intimate connection between the artist and the client - one that I am always honored to experience.
