With a deep understanding for the way her clients gather, live and unwind, interior designer and founder of the Striped Lemon Design firm Andrea Dussault creates spaces with a special touch that seems both effortless and extraordinary. “By using quality craftsmanship, premium materials and elevated amenities, our intentional and curated designs encourage entertaining as well as everyday living,” she said. “We thoughtfully incorporate our clients’ lifestyle into every design choice, creating environments that are as visually compelling and expressive as they are functional and livable.”
Dussault commented that lately, clients are leaning towards designs that have a lived-in feel. “Homeowners aren’t looking to create rooms that are cookie-cutter or minimalist, they want nooks and vignettes that mirror their personality and character,” she said.
Using natural elements such as rattan, cane, wood, leather and marble in furnishings, fabrics, wallpapers and rugs, Dussault and her team achieve the sort of timeless look that their clients crave. Texturing walls with tile, plaster, wood, moss or stone and choosing furnishings, accessories, lampshades and window treatments with detailed accents are other strategies she employs for pulling rooms together in a way that, like a cashmere blanket, feels elegant yet comfortable. She added that weaving colors and patterns into the mix, not just with paint but with wallpaper, murals, artwork and accessories such as lampshades and stacks of books, adds depth and richness.
As Dussault explained, none of these design hacks are trends. “My grandmother taught me so much about enjoying beautiful accessories and furniture and not keeping them packed away or covered. They are meant to be used, enjoyed and appreciated,” she said. “Decorating with vintage or antique pieces and layering patterns and textures invites every room to tell its own story.”
For Dussault, one of the most rewarding aspects of her work is the relationships that she and her team have built with their clients and trade partners. “We absolutely love what we do and couldn’t do any of it without the trusted collaboration and partnerships that we maximize every day,” she said. “To deliver the level of luxury our clients desire, it takes the right high-quality partners, a deep understanding of a client’s desires and lifestyle and the experience and skill to bring it all together seamlessly.”
What inspires Dussault and her team the most, she said, is, “The final reaction and emotion we witness after we bring our client’s vision to life.”
One such job that the design firm recently finished was the Southern Sophistication project, during which, Dussault and her team installed an entirely new kitchen, complete with all new custom cabinetry, gorgeous dolomite countertops and new brushed brass finishes. Adding other finishing touches such as fresh paint throughout, wallpaper in several spaces, custom drapery and pillows, new custom built-ins, lighting and new and existing furnishings and accessories elevated the design and transformed this already beautiful townhome into an updated, sophisticated, southern stunner.
When Dussault isn’t on the job, she loves to be outside working in her gardens, going for bike rides or sitting by the pool. She also enjoys going downtown to try new restaurants and exploring the historic neighborhoods, walking on the beach and looking for dolphins, entertaining and spending time with friends and family and golf cart rides around the island looking at all the beautiful homes and landscaping. For Dussault, the Lowcountry lifestyle never gets old.
