What began as a TikTok discovery has quickly grown into one of Williamson County's most unique nights out.
Kelly-Marie Gabele, owner of Nashville's chapter of The Social Greenhouse, first stumbled across Plant Bingo while scrolling social media. The original concept, created by a couple in Dallas, immediately caught her attention.
"I went looking for Plant Bingo in my own area. Couldn't find one, so I thought it would be fun to host it myself," says Gabele. "I've spent over twenty years in events and performance, so a room full of people laughing, connecting, and leaving with a new plant baby in hand felt like the most brilliant idea, and I knew it belonged in Nashville."
After connecting with the founders, Gabele became the first Social Greenhouse chapter outside of Dallas, bringing the concept to Middle Tennessee.
The concept itself is simple, but explaining what makes it work is where Gabele lights up.
"Plant Bingo here is Nash! It's normal bingo, well, as normal as bingo can be with a British host, except you're playing to win beautiful plants, with about two hours of fun and entertainment along the way," she says. "It's $30 for two hours, and everyone walks away with a plant, whether you win or not."
A native of Portsmouth, England, Gabele moved to Franklin five years ago after meeting her husband, Brent, at a marathon at Walt Disney World. Plant Bingo has become one more way she fulfills a personal mission that runs through everything she does.
"I suppose if there's a common thread through everything I do, it's this: I want to help people feel great and live life to the fullest," she says. "Plant Bingo is just two hours of pure fun with like-minded people in the middle of a normal grind week."
That focus on connection is evident from the moment guests arrive. What has surprised Gabele most isn't the popularity of houseplants. It's the number of people who attend alone.
"I'm really surprised by the amount of single women that are buying tickets and coming on their own," she says. "One lady who has attended multiple events has actually made friends through Plant Bingo. That's what I want."
Communal seating often encourages conversations among strangers, and those conversations frequently continue long after the event ends. Guests have even reached out afterward hoping to reconnect with people they met at their tables. For Gabele, those moments are every bit as rewarding as a sold-out event.
The audience is diverse: families and children, girls' nights out, couples on date nights, men flying solo, plant enthusiasts, curious beginners and regulars who never miss a round.
"Honestly, whether you've got a full jungle at home or you've killed every succulent you've ever owned, there's a seat at the table for you."
Community support extends beyond the attendees. All plants are sourced from Desert & Vine, an East Nashville plant shop owned by Rachel Ligtenberg, whom Gabele credits as an essential partner.
"I just really wanted this to be about community," she says. "I want to help small businesses."
Plant Bingo events have been hosted at venues including Black Dog Pub, Curio Brewing Company, Crazy Gnome Brewery and the Skylight Bar at The Factory at Franklin. The partnerships benefit everyone involved: venues fill seats on slower nights, guests discover local businesses, and Plant Bingo creates a memorable experience built around fun rather than competition.
Looking ahead, Gabele hopes to continue expanding throughout the region with additional events each week.
"It's about so much more than just my business," she says. "It's a win-win for everyone involved."
Ask Gabele about her favorite part of the week and she'll tell you it's the stranger who walked in alone and left with a table full of new friends. And, of course, a plant.
