Exploring close to home can sometimes lead to the best discoveries, and Downtown Somerville offers plenty to uncover just a short drive away.

After years working within the school system as both a principal and administrator, Dana Kessel was not necessarily searching for a career in downtown development. But after visiting Downtown Somerville for the first time, she immediately saw something special: a walkable, energetic community filled with independent businesses, local restaurants and a sense of connection that felt increasingly rare.

Now part of the three-person team behind the Downtown Somerville Alliance, Kessel helps lead efforts focused on supporting small businesses, organizing community events and continuing to grow Somerville into a regional destination recognized across New Jersey.

“What drew me here was the opportunity,” Kessel explained. “There was already something really strong happening in Somerville, and I wanted to be part of helping it continue to grow.”

Downtown Somerville has steadily built a reputation as one of the state’s top downtown districts. Unlike many neighboring towns that lack a centralized downtown area altogether, Somerville offers a fully walkable experience where visitors can explore shops, restaurants and entertainment all within a few blocks.

That accessibility, paired with the town’s rich history and preserved character, has become a defining part of its identity. Historic architecture lines the streets, while independently owned businesses continue to shape the culture of the downtown. According to Kessel, maintaining that local identity remains one of the organization’s biggest priorities..

“There are no chain businesses downtown,” she said. “That’s something we’re really proud of because it keeps the downtown unique and community-focused.”

One of the Downtown Somerville Alliance’s biggest goals is continuing to attract visitors through year-round events designed to support local businesses and increase foot traffic throughout the district. While winter weather can sometimes create challenges, especially during colder months when snowstorms keep people indoors, the downtown quickly comes alive once spring and summer arrive.

The season often begins with events like the Galentine’s Chocolate Walk and Girls Night Out before transitioning into a packed summer calendar featuring concerts, community festivals and themed nights designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

“We really try to create events for everyone,” Kessel explained. “Different events attract different people, and that’s important because every business benefits in different ways.”

Throughout the warmer months, Downtown Somerville hosts events including Cruise Nights, Summer Stage concerts, candlelit performances, celebrations and Juneteenth programming. While restaurants often see the biggest increase in traffic during major events, Kessel emphasized that the larger goal is creating consistent opportunities for visitors to experience the downtown and support local businesses.

Community remains at the center of every initiative, and one of Somerville’s most distinctive features is its commitment to being dog friendly. Paw print decals displayed in storefront windows identify pet friendly businesses, while dog convenience stations placed throughout the downtown encourage visitors to explore alongside their pets.

That culture was fully displayed during Puppy Palooza, a recent event that drew more than 4,000 attendees from across New Jersey.

“It’s become more than just a local event,” Kessel said. “People are coming from all over the state to experience what Somerville has to offer.”

As Downtown Somerville continues growing, Kessel says the mission remains rooted in preserving the welcoming, community centered atmosphere that first inspired her to join the organization. Through local businesses, inclusive programming and a carefully curated calendar of events, the downtown continues working toward its goal of becoming not just one of New Jersey’s best downtowns, but one of its most visited destinations as well.
