Where Every Cat Finds Connection

Provide second chances through Sydney’s Cat Lounge and Sanctuary

Adopting a pet is a big commitment, and there’s no need to rush into it. That’s what makes Sydney’s Cat Lounge so special. Instead of feeling pressured to make an immediate decision, guests can spend time with the cats, learn their personalities, and determine which connection feels just right.

The idea for Sydney’s started with the cats that Founder Quin Whiddon couldn’t stop thinking about—those sitting behind plexiglass in pet stores, waiting to be chosen. She wondered what happened to those who weren’t picked, especially the older or shy cats who could be passed over time and time again. That led her deeper into animal rescue, where she discovered just how many cats needed someone willing to see beyond the first impression.

After years of volunteering, Whiddon envisioned something different from a traditional shelter: a relaxed, cage-free environment where cats could simply be cats.

“Finding a new member of your family should be a happy experience,” says Whiddon. “At Sydney’s, people can slow down, enjoy the whimsical surroundings, and genuinely connect with the cats. It gives those cats—especially the ones who might otherwise be overlooked—a chance to be seen, understood, loved, and ultimately chosen.”

Sydney’s Sanctuary serves as their nonprofit component, accepting donations that support the well-being of adoptable cats, as well as lifelong sanctuary residents. They ensure the cats have a safe space to land while waiting for their forever families.

One rescue that has stayed with Whiddon involved a mom and her three kittens, saved by a Good Samaritan before a major storm. The kittens were very sick, with one at risk of losing an eye. Thanks to their relationship with South Austin Cat Hospital, the fragile babies grew into happy, healthy adults.

Trusted partnerships make it possible for Sydney’s to save and protect cats in these situations, given the cost of medical care and other essentials. Dr. Elsey’s has been instrumental in providing enough litter for around 20 cats at a time, while Tomlinson’s contributes through food donations.

“Every expense these partnerships help offset allows us to put those resources toward caring for more cats. It really does take a community to make rescue work,” says Whiddon.

The community has also embraced the lounge’s playful approach to events, with unexpected experiences inspired by the season or monthly themes. For example, in honor of Halloween this past October, they held a private event with Sister Temperance Tarot, voted Best Tarot Reader/Psychic in Austin for 12 years. The goal is to share different ways to fall in love with the lounge.

Whiddon is deeply grateful for the guests who come out and have fun with their crew and make it possible to move the mission forward.

“I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has helped share our story. The publicity we’ve received has given people a chance to learn who we are, understand what we’re trying to accomplish, and most importantly see the cats who need homes,” says Whiddon. “None of this happens without people showing up for us, and I don’t take any of it for granted.”
