Some of the best stories begin on a clothes rack.
The best shopping finds are rarely the ones you planned for. Think of the jacket you almost walked past, the handbag that catches your eye from across the room, or the designer label tucked between two unexpected discoveries. That thrill has made Fashion Finds a beloved tradition for shoppers throughout the area.
Part boutique, part community tradition, Fashion Finds has become one of Attic Angel Association's signature fundraising events. Every item is carefully sorted, inspected, steamed, tagged, and attractively displayed, creating the welcoming shopping experience that has earned the sale a loyal following.
For many, the fun is as much about the experience as the purchase itself. Browsing the racks often leads to unexpected conversations, shared fashion advice, and the excitement of finding something you didn't know you were looking for.
One shopper, who managed several retail stores throughout her career, offered perhaps the highest compliment of all:
"The sale was well organized, easy to shop, and had good merchandise that was reasonably priced."
Attention to detail is no accident. It reflects months of preparation by volunteers determined to make every shopper's experience a memorable one.
Behind the scenes are Attic Angel's dedicated member volunteers, known as Angels. Long before the first fashion lovers arrive, they spend months collecting donations, carefully evaluating each donation, steaming garments, organizing inventory, and arranging displays that give the sale the feel of your favorite shop.
Fashion Finds began in 2004 after members of the Angel Class of 2000 contributed gently used clothing to the YMCA's Dress for Success clothing drive. Seeing the generosity of that effort sparked an idea of their own: the Angel Wear Sale. What began as a small sale featuring quality secondhand clothing has grown into one of the association's most anticipated annual fundraising events. As the event grew, it became the Classic Clothing Sale before evolving into today's Fashion Finds. More than two decades later, it continues to draw shoppers while staying true to its founding purpose.
As resale shopping continues to grow, Fashion Finds features distinctive, pre-loved pieces alongside select new items while supporting sustainability, giving beautifully made clothing a second life.
Every purchase also supports Attic Angel's mission of serving children, families, and older adults throughout Dane County. Since 1889, the nonprofit has strengthened lives through volunteerism, advocacy, grants, and services that improve lives across generations. Fashion Finds is one of the association's signature fundraising events, helping fund grants and programs that make a meaningful difference. Shoppers leave with more than fantastic finds. They leave knowing their purchases help neighbors throughout the greater community.
For many shoppers, Fashion Finds has become an annual tradition. Among the first through the door each year is a mother-daughter duo. They gather armfuls of clothing, compare favorites, debate what to keep, return a few pieces to the rack, and head home with new additions to their wardrobes. Then they're back again on Saturday, eager to see what half-price treasures await. Like so many returning shoppers, they've discovered that every year's sale offers something different, making the tradition just as exciting today as when they first joined the line. They're just one example of the many familiar faces who return year after year, drawn back by the joy of discovering something unexpected.
More than 20 years after a handful of donated garments inspired a simple idea, Fashion Finds continues to remind us that great style never goes out of fashion, and neither does generosity.
