Wrap It Up

Buttery crescent rolls + spiced apples = the easiest and tastiest fall dessert you'll make all season!

There’s something about apple dumplings that tastes like fall. Warm apples baked inside golden, buttery pastry, with cinnamon and sugar filling the kitchen with that unmistakable autumn aroma. It’s the kind of dessert that feels like a hug on a cool October evening. Apple dumplings are one of my favorite fall treats because they’re both nostalgic and comforting, turning simple ingredients into something that feels special. They remind me that some of the best recipes aren’t necessarily complicated; they’re the ones that bring people to the kitchen and make a house smell like home. Whether they’re served after a family dinner, brought to a fall gathering, or enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, apple dumplings capture everything I love about this time of year: cozy evenings, good food, and making memories around the table. I hope this recipe brings back beautiful memories of seasons past and that you love every delicious bite!

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 1 (8-oz) can refrigerated crescent rolls
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup lemon-lime soda (Sprite or 7-Up)
  • Optional: pinch of nutmeg or apple pie spice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish.
  2. Prep apples:
Peel, core, and cut each apple into 4 wedges (8 total).
  3. Wrap apples:
Separate crescent dough into triangles. Wrap one apple slice in each crescent roll, starting at the wide end and sealing well. Place seam-side down in the baking dish.
  4. Make the sauce:
In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and optional nutmeg. Heat just until combined - don’t boil.
  5. Assemble:
Pour the butter mixture evenly over the dumplings.
Carefully pour the soda around the edges and between dumplings (not directly on top).
  6. Bake:
Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Rest & serve:
Let cool for 10 minutes so the sauce thickens slightly.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce for extra indulgence.
  • Great for holidays, potlucks, or cozy weekends.

Tips & Variations

  • Less sweet: Reduce sugar to ½ cup.
  • Spiced: Add 1/2 teaspoon of apple pie spice or cardamom.
  • Extra gooey: Spoon sauce from the pan over the dumplings before serving.
  • Make ahead: Assemble earlier in the day and refrigerate (without soda), then add soda and bake fresh.
