When Kelsey Surratt opened Jonquies in Smyrna Market Village, she wasn’t just opening a gift shop — she was creating a space that feels like it’s always been part of the neighborhood. Bright, inviting, and just a little bit cheeky, Jonquies is a love letter to Smyrna, wrapped up in ribbons, candles, and laughter.
Tucked along the brick-lined streets of the Village, the shop glows with the soft scent of candles and the shimmer of carefully wrapped gifts. Through the front windows, twinkling lights and colorful displays invite shoppers to slow down and stay awhile. It’s the kind of place that feels familiar the first time you walk in — like discovering something that’s been waiting for you all along.
Even the name is meant to make you smile — and maybe pause for a second. “Is it Jon-keez or Jon-kweez?” Kelsey laughs. “Honestly, however you say it is fine! It’s our affectionate nod to the Jonquil City — and we kind of liked the idea that it sounded like the name of the people who live here. The Jonquies! It just felt right.”
That mix of humor, heart, and hometown pride runs through everything in the store. “We wanted it to be playful and welcoming — not fussy,” she says. “Sort of part gift shop, part curiosity cabinet.”
And it is exactly that. One minute you’re admiring a delicate pair of earrings; the next, you’re giggling at a mug that says something a little too relatable. Shelves brim with clever hats, cozy sweaters, bath and body goodies, candles, and baby gifts that practically wrap themselves. “We try to stock things that make people smile or think, ‘Oh, that’s perfect for so-and-so,’” Kelsey says. “And yes, Erik insists that there’s always something for men, too.”
Her husband, Erik, is her steady partner in both life and business. “I’m a list-maker and an anxious details person,” Kelsey admits. “He’s calm and laid-back. When I get overwhelmed, he’ll happily jump in to help customers or pick out products — and he’s surprisingly good at it!”
Together, the couple live just a short walk away, making Smyrna Market Village feel like an extension of home. “The Village has such a heartbeat,” Kelsey says. “Everyone’s out walking, talking, and supporting local businesses. The markets and festivals are wonderful — and honestly, you can’t beat the commute.”
This shop may be new, but the roots run deep. Kelsey grew up watching her parents run a beloved gift and collectibles boutique during the heyday of the ’90s and early 2000s. “I learned early that a store isn’t just about what you sell,” she says. “It’s about how people feel when they walk in the door. My parents built their business on community and service. Customers became friends because they were remembered — because someone took the time to ask about their kids or set something aside they’d love. That’s the kind of connection that stays with you.”
After years in corporate accounting, Kelsey found herself missing that spark — the creativity, the conversations, the joy of helping someone find the perfect thing. Jonquies became her full-circle moment. “We’ve lived in Smyrna since 2015, but opening the shop has been like meeting the city all over again,” she says. “I was a shy kid growing up, so connecting with people didn’t always come naturally. But this has been such a gift — getting to know our neighbors and being part of something joyful.”
For the holidays, Jonquies transforms into a treasure trove of seasonal delight. You’ll find festive décor, locally inspired Smyrna merchandise, ornaments that twinkle with humor, and gifts that make you laugh out loud. “People can’t get enough of the funny saying hats or garden flags,” Kelsey says. “Humor’s been huge this year — everyone wants something that brings a smile.”
But Jonquies is more than a shop full of pretty things. It’s a celebration of thoughtfulness — the kind that lives in handwritten notes, unexpected gifts, and small gestures that make life brighter. “I want people to feel like they can take their time and just enjoy being here,” Kelsey says. “Maybe they find the perfect gift. Maybe they just find a good laugh or a nice moment. I hope it always feels personal.”
When the evening hush settles over the Market Village and the last shoppers head home, Kelsey and Erik trade the bustle of the store for the comfort of home — three dogs at their feet, dinner from around the corner, and a Christmas movie they’ve already seen ten times (and will happily watch ten more).
For them, that’s what giving is all about — creating joy, connection, and community one thoughtful moment at a time. And at Jonquies, those moments are waiting behind every ribbon, every candle, and every “just because” gift that reminds us how special it feels to be remembered.
“A shop isn’t just about what you sell — it’s about how people feel when they’re there.”
