You May Be Sleeping Wrong

Discover these "sleep coaches," who blend science and wellness principles to help you finally sleep better

You may be sleeping wrong.

Not “I stayed up too late binge-watching Netflix” wrong. More like your mattress, pillow and sleep position may quietly be working against your body every single night.

That’s the eye-opening message behind Snooze Mattress Company, a boutique sleep store that approaches mattresses less like furniture and more like wellness technology.

And yes, the staff wears pajamas.

Enter and you’re greeted by pajama-clad “sleep coaches” who ask questions most mattress stores never even consider.

Are you waking up with shoulder pain? Hip pain? Neck pain? Tossing and turning all night? Feeling exhausted even after eight hours of sleep?

You may not be getting older. You may simply be sleeping wrong.

“We spend a third of our lives on our mattress,” says sleep coach Bree Phillips. “If your spine isn’t properly aligned, your body can’t fully recover the way it’s supposed to.”

That wellness-first philosophy is what inspired owner Jake Wylonis to bring Snooze to Michigan a year ago. After diving deeper into the health-and-wellness world through podcasts and research, he became fascinated by how overlooked sleep had become in the broader wellness conversation.

“We all focus on supplements, workouts and nutrition,” he says. “But if you’re not sleeping well, you can’t be the best version of yourself.”

The centerpiece of the Snooze experience is its “Dream Mapping” technology, a pressure-mapping system that analyzes how your body interacts with different mattresses. As you lie on a specialized bed, sensors identify pressure points, spinal alignment and support needs in real time.

The results can be surprisingly revealing.

“A lot of customers come in convinced they need a firm mattress,” Bree says. “Then we map them and realize their body actually needs something softer and more supportive.”

In other words, your brain may think one thing, while your body is begging for another.

“Customers shop with their brains, but sleep with their bodies,” Bree says with a laugh.

The technology also helps eliminate much of the guesswork. Instead of bouncing between dozens of mattresses, Dream Mapping narrows the field to options tailored specifically to the customer’s body and sleep habits.

And the stories customers tell afterward can be dramatic.

Some report their hip and shoulder pain has disappeared. Some say they’re finally sleeping through the night. Others discover that their constant tossing and turning – or repeated late-night trips to the bathroom – may actually have been their body reacting to discomfort all along.

“You can literally hear people sigh with relief sometimes when they lay on the right mattress,” Jake says. “Their body knows immediately.”

One of the brands generating the most buzz right now is Helix, a premium mattress line known for its cooling technology and deep-sleep support.

“A lot of people don’t realize temperature affects sleep tremendously,” Bree says. “If your body overheats during the night, you naturally wake up more often and spend less time in deep sleep.”

Many Helix models include cooling layers designed to disperse body heat and help sleepers stay comfortable longer, along with support systems that contour more naturally to the body.

“It’s been a game changer for us,” Jake says. “Customers come back specifically asking for Helix because they’re noticing such a difference in how they sleep.”

According to Snooze, these customers report deeper sleep, fewer interruptions during the night and waking up feeling more refreshed. Proof, perhaps, that better sleep isn’t just about comfort; it’s about wellness.

Still, despite all the technology, Snooze somehow feels more spa-like than sales-driven.

Customers are encouraged to linger. Test beds. Relax. Ask questions. Learn how to sleep better.

Which, perhaps, is the point.

Because in a world obsessed with optimizing everything else, Snooze is built around a surprisingly simple idea.

Better days begin with better nights.
