Your Home, Your Style

Sandy Eaton of New Day Organizing explains why organized spaces make it easier to live peacefully and authentically

Many people think organization is simply about reducing clutter. How does organization contribute to a home's overall style and aesthetic?

People often think style comes from what you buy. I think it starts with what you can actually see. When counters are clear and everything has a place, your favorite pieces finally stand out. The artwork on the wall, family photos, a beautiful lamp, or a collection you've gathered over the years become the focus instead of the clutter around them.

How can homeowners display meaningful collections, books, or décor without making a room feel crowded?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is feeling like everything has to be on display. Our homes tell our story, but that doesn't mean every souvenir, family heirloom, or favorite book needs to be out all at once. Choose the pieces that make you smile every time you walk into the room. Give them a little space so they can be seen and appreciated.

How can organization help people better define and express their personal style at home?

I think one of the biggest things clutter does is make it hard to see what we truly love. Over the years, our homes fill up with "just in case" items, unfinished projects, gifts we feel obligated to keep, and things that no longer fit our lives. Before long, those things start taking up the space that could be filled with the people, memories, and pieces that really bring us joy. When you take the time to edit those things, your personal style starts to show naturally. You find yourself choosing artwork, furniture, colors, and décor that reflect who you are today, not who you were 10 or 20 years ago.

What's one piece of advice you'd give readers who want a home that's as stylish as it is organized?

I'd tell them to stop trying to create a perfect home and start creating one that works for them. The most beautiful homes I've walked into aren't always the biggest or the most expensive. They're the ones that feel welcoming, where everything has a purpose, and where the homeowners can actually relax and enjoy being there.

When you're deciding what belongs in your home, ask yourself a simple question: Does this add value to my life? If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go. Every item you remove creates a little more space for the things that matter most, whether that's gathering around the dinner table, spending time with family, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home.

At the end of the day, that's what I want for every client. I want them to walk through the front door, take a deep breath, and feel like they're finally home. Because a home that feels peaceful will always be in style.

One thing I always remind clients is this: Your home should tell your story, not store your past.
