Military veterans are held in high esteem in Frisco. Now families with relatives who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives on behalf of America have a revered and steadfast community place to honor those loved ones at the new, local monument for Gold Star families, who are immediate family members of fallen service members.

"Thank you to the Woody Williams Foundation, local veteran advocate Chuck Wright, John Keating, Play Frisco, and the countless others who made this happen," states Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney at a recent unveiling of the monument.

Jeff says Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments are two-sided tributes made of black granite. One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot and Sacrifice. At the center of this tribute, he adds, is a silhouette of a saluting service member who represents the Legacy of the Loved Ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of everyone else.

"Together, these features tell each community's unique story based upon the pillars of the foundation," says the mayor.

Other good news is that the Chamber's Leadership Frisco Class XXIV members raised funds to revitalize the veteran memorial in Frisco Commons, which was unveiled on Memorial Day. Originally dedicated in 2004, this memorial includes a Walk of Honor with dedicated veteran bricks, a Wall of Honor in remembrance of 11 young service members from Frisco who died during times of military conflict, and various plaques recognizing and describing significant wars.
