Cultivating Healthier Trees Through Expert Care

Jeff Harvey’s team provides expert arborist guidance, maintenance planning, and tree care practices for the good of the local community

In Southern California, where neighborhoods are stitched together by canopies of lush, green trees, caring for the landscape is an investment in the community.

Arbor Expertise’s Lead Arborist, Jeff Harvey, began his career high in the branches as a tree climber, and has since grown that passion into a business dedicated to preserving the health and beauty of trees throughout the region.

As Jeff started learning more about various species of trees, their characteristics, and the proper way to care for them, his knowledge of effective landscaping techniques also flourished.

Jeff’s drive to continually expand his expertise shaped his professional approach and the culture of his team, reinforcing the idea that great tree care begins with knowledge and accountability.

“The number one value I hold in my industry is quality tree work,” explains Jeff, who believes healthy trees are among a property’s most valuable assets.

Basking in the Benefits of Trees

“There is a holistic approach to managing any living species. As society has evolved to understand the importance of taking care of our health and the environment around us."

Jeff notes that a strategically planted tree, once matured, could reduce the temperature by 10 degrees in the summer.

“On a hot summer day, simply stand directly in the sun or under a tree to realize the marvelous effects trees have on our environment.”

Tree Trimmer vs. Arborist

What’s the difference between a tree trimmer and a Certified Arborist?

According to Jeff, tree trimmers indiscriminately cut foliage off the tree in many cases.

A Certified Arborist knows why and when to cut any foliage. They will explain proper timing for trimming and what is going to be cut off. Arborists will be able to identify other unhealthy or hazardous trees on the property. They will recommend any fertilization, irrigation adjustment, and treatment of pests that will cause damage that were observed while on site.

In a broader sense, an arborist is a trained professional specializing in the ART and SCIENCE of planting, maintaining, and studying individual trees, shrubs, and other woody plants for their health and longevity.

Arborists offer services ranging from pruning and pest control to risk assessment and removal, going beyond basic landscaping by focusing on deep tree biology and long-term care.

They are essentially "tree doctors,” diagnosing issues and ensuring trees thrive, instead of focusing solely on their appearance.

Tips for Tree and Landscaping Care

“One of the major components of managing properties starts with overall appearance,” says Jeff.

Curb appeal and pride of ownership are the first things people see when arriving at your property.

Jeff advises that the optimal time for tree trimming is in the fall, after the summer heat has subsided, but prior to the Santa Ana winds arrive.

“The tree's metabolism slows during the fall and winter months when sunlight is less. ‘Spring, however, is equally important. Spring tune-ups should also be a part of your landscaping plan. This is an ideal time to put new plants in the ground, fertilize, mulch planter beds, and increase irrigation for the summer months,” he says.

“This allows the plants time to get established, so they have roots and are flourishing during the summer months, when you get the most use of your yard.”

Jeff states that mulching is the best technique for adding nutrients back into the soil, curbing weed growth, and increasing irrigation efficiency.

When you’re ready to work with an arborist, homeowners can expect a 2–5-year maintenance plan outlining tree species, current health, potential risks, and long-term care strategies.

As trees mature or compete for resources, selective removal may be recommended to protect the overall landscape.

Having a plan in place provides the homeowner with adequate time to research and budget for any maintenance or upgrades. A thoughtful approach increases both the safety and aesthetic value of the property.

“A trimming regimen, outline for possible removals, treatment, and timing, and any other observable areas in need of upgrades that will increase the aesthetic value and appearance of the property should be outlined in the plan,” he adds.
