After ten years serving the University System of Georgia, Michael Charlton wanted to do something new, something different, something of his own. And yet, he wasn’t quite sure what that would look like until he spoke with a friend in Virginia, who introduced him to the idea that would ultimately become Budget Blinds of McDonough and Peachtree City.
What started as a personal dream quickly grew into a thriving business venture. In 2018, Michael partnered with his mother to establish Budget Blinds, a window-covering shop in Conyers. Since then, this two-person family operation has expanded to include his brother as operations manager, eight additional staff members, and services extending throughout Henry and Fayette Counties.
With the motto “Style and service for every budget,” Budget Blinds caters to a wide range of clients, from homeowners to designers, and undertakes a wide variety of projects, from residential homes to commercial apartment complexes and strip malls. Approximately 75% of their clients come to them without a clear idea of what they want, making Michael and his team experts in understanding client needs and offering inspiration. “We come to them and try to figure out what their needs are,” Michael explained. During the initial consultation, “We match them up with what they are looking for and their ultimate needs as opposed to forcing a particular product on the customer.”
In striving to understand their clients’ visions, the Budget Blinds team positions themselves beyond just a product provider. “We are more of a service than someone you buy a product from,” Michael said. From ideation to installation, “We compile the entire process so you don’t have to lift a finger.”
Budget Blinds offers a wide array of products, including blinds, shutters, and shades for both indoor and outdoor spaces, and styles ranging from classic to contemporary, tailored to each customer’s preferences. Michael noted that minimalistic window treatments with motorization and automation are particularly popular right now. Despite current trends, he advises clients to do some research before the initial consultation. Whether it’s browsing Pinterest for inspiration or Googling price ranges for desired treatments, this preparation helps the Budget Blinds team align their recommendations with clients’ needs and budgets. While most consultations are discovery, having an idea of style preferences and a budget in mind ensures the process is as efficient and productive as possible.
To make their services accessible, Budget Blinds offers free, no-hassle, in-home consultations. Even if clients aren’t ready to commit immediately due to budget constraints or indecision, Michael emphasized that the team is there to support them. “We’ll help you get a game plan,” he said. Recognizing that “This is a journey” for clients, he added, “Just as clients are investing in their homes or projects, we’re invested in them.”
The team’s commitment to investment extends beyond their clients to the local community. Michael and his team actively support initiatives such as the anti-bullying campaign Grady Gives, the Home Builder Association, and local realtors. They also participate in Chamber events and meetings. “We make time to get involved and contribute,” Michael shared, emphasizing the importance of supporting the community that has supported Budget Blinds over the years.
Eliciting help from the Budget Blinds team is an investment not just in window coverings, but in a relationship with a group of people who genuinely want to guide you through enhancing your home or project. For those interested in beginning their window-covering journey, schedule an initial consultation by calling 770-450-6137 or filling out the form on the Budget Blinds website (www.budgetblinds.com/mcdonough-ga/). Like Michael said, “We’re really just trying to help you get to where you want to be.”
