Built on Service

How Brett Shaw Makes Home Mean More

For Brett Shaw, service isn't just a business philosophy. It's a way of life woven through every role he holds, from mayor of Morrison, Oklahoma, to volunteer firefighter, to owner of House Doctors of East Tulsa. In a town of fewer than 500 residents where everyone knows his phone number, public service and family life blend seamlessly.

At home, Brett wears his most treasured hats: husband, father, and grandfather. He and his wife have built a blended family of four children, now expanded by three young grandchildren. "The kids are the focus for me and my wife," Brett explains, describing his daily routine as a juggling act.

As mayor, volunteer firefighter, and first responder, Brett serves his community in vital ways. He meets with constituents around town, teaches CPR certification classes, and responds to emergencies, using his time, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure his neighbors are heard and protected.

That same spirit of service flows directly into his main focus, House Doctors, the handyman and home improvement company Brett leads with a clear mission: to fill the gaps in Tulsa's home repair market while treating customers like family.  "For me, it’s about serving people," Brett says, “I love the opportunity to sit with someone in their home and help make their vision come to life in ways that they never thought possible.” Brett saw homeowners stuck between two imperfect options: large construction firms with high minimums, or skilled handymen who lack the resources and administrative support of an established company. House Doctors offers the trustworthiness and professionalism of a major company with the personal attention of a one-person operation.

One major area of focus for Brett is helping residents who are aging in place. As retirees choose to remain in their homes, many properties require safety and mobility modifications. Inadequate lighting, missing grab bars, absent ramps, and inappropriate door handles can transform a beloved home into a hazard. “From the first time a senior adult falls in their home until the second is on average nine months,” he explains, “and from there it reduces down to three months per incident. After the third incident, a person often requires assisted care.” House Doctors provides comprehensive safety assessments and the necessary modifications to extend the time people can safely live independently. “We want them to know they have an advocate with us that can help them.”

Growing up, Brett learned to fix things out of necessity. Throughout his early career, he developed a breadth and depth of knowledge through many paths: working as a mechanic, learning from his uncle, an architect, about reading and drafting blueprints and drawings, and leading as a project superintendent, where he learned the ins and outs of different trades working alongside contractors. With his many years of acquiring a vast skillset, Brett was prepared to successfully start House Doctors when the opportunity arose. "I've carried these home repair skills with me my whole life; it's something I've always been able to do," Brett says.

Customer service and transparency guide everything Brett does. “We want to have the opportunity to develop a relationship with our clients and allow them the opportunity to trust us.” House Doctors is committed to being a one-stop-shop for homeowners. While Brett and his team handle everything from home maintenance to structural repairs, their greatest strength is their care for clients. “Our clients’ families are very important to us,” says Brett, “we are very much a family unit here.”

For homeowners, Brett emphasizes remembering regular maintenance: monitoring swelling doors and windows that indicate foundation issues, changing air filters monthly, replacing smoke detector batteries, checking drains under sinks, and watching for faulty or loose outlets. Brett's commitment to his clients extends beyond job sites, often troubleshooting problems with homeowners over the phone.

The company's process reflects Brett's values. Customers reaching out to House Doctors will always receive free estimates. "Never ever will the company charge for an estimate,” Brett emphasizes, “regardless of the job size.” After a thorough on-site assessment, customers receive a detailed estimate within five days. Every labor job comes with a one-year labor warranty, demonstrating the company's confidence in its workmanship. “We have a great team that we work with, and if a project comes up that I’m not certified or licensed for, we work with many excellent contractors, people that I know personally and would trust in my own home.”

The company continues to grow, and as of March 1st, House Doctors has expanded into the Oklahoma City and Edmond markets. For Brett Shaw, growth is measured in families helped, homes improved and made safer, and communities served. Whether he's responding to an emergency, addressing constituent concerns, or helping a homeowner age gracefully in place, the thread connecting it all remains constant: service. In Brett's hands, home improvement isn't just about fixing what's broken. It's about building relationships, strengthening community, and ensuring that everyone has a safe, comfortable place to call home.

For me, it’s about serving people.
