As electric vehicles become a more familiar sight throughout the Pascack Valley, many homeowners are discovering that buying the vehicle is only the first step. The next question is often the most important: How do you make charging at home simple, reliable and affordable?
For customers served by Orange & Rockland Utilities, that answer comes through the Charger Ready for Home program, an initiative designed to help homeowners prepare their homes for the future while reducing the upfront costs of installing Level 2 EV charging equipment.
Rockland Electric Company (subsidiary of Orange & Rockland) has been delivering energy to New Jersey communities in Bergen, Passaic, and Sussex Counties for more than a century. Since its beginnings as Rockland Light & Power Company in 1899, the utility has grown alongside the neighborhoods it serves, evolving from powering homes and businesses to helping customers embrace cleaner energy technologies that fit today's lifestyle.
That commitment extends beyond providing electricity. Through programs like Charger Ready for Home, the company is helping remove one of the biggest barriers many homeowners face when considering an electric vehicle: convenient charging.
For most EV owners, charging at home quickly becomes part of the daily routine. Instead of making special trips to public charging stations, drivers simply plug in overnight and wake up to a fully charged vehicle, much like charging a smartphone while they sleep. The convenience saves time, provides greater flexibility and often reduces charging costs.
Installing a Level 2 charger, however, sometimes requires electrical upgrades. Depending on a home's existing electrical system, homeowners may need panel improvements, new wiring, conduit or other make-ready work before a charger can be safely installed.
That's where the Charger Ready for Home program makes a meaningful difference.
Eligible customers in Orange & Rockland's New Jersey service territory can receive financial incentives that help offset many of these installation costs. The program reimburses up to 50 percent of customer-side installation expenses, capped at $1,000, while utility-side upgrades may qualify for up to $5,000 in incentives. Overall, incentives can cover as much as 90 percent of a qualifying project's total cost.
The program focuses on the electrical infrastructure needed to safely support home charging, helping homeowners make improvements that will continue serving their household for years to come.
Safety also remains a central part of the process. Customers work with licensed electricians and choose approved chargers that meet New Jersey Board of Public Utilities requirements. These standards help ensure installations comply with electrical codes, operate reliably and qualify for available incentives.
Once installation is complete, homeowners submit their application along with receipts and documentation. After the project is reviewed and approved, the incentive is issued as a reimbursement check, an important detail that allows customers to plan for upfront installation costs while knowing financial assistance is on the way.
As more families transition to electric vehicles, programs like Charger Ready for Home help make that decision feel less intimidating and more attainable.
For Orange & Rockland, supporting clean energy isn't simply about keeping pace with changing technology. It's about helping customers confidently prepare their homes for the future while ensuring the electric grid continues to meet the evolving needs of the communities it serves.
For Pascack Valley homeowners considering an electric vehicle, the road ahead may be closer and more affordable than they think.
