At the heart of the Collin County Animal Shelter lies a linchpin that nurtures and supports its most vulnerable residents: the foster program. From young animals in need of nurturing care to injured animals requiring specialized attention, fosters provide a safe haven for these animals to grow and thrive. Fosters not only play a crucial role in preparing these animals for adoption, they also help alleviate shelter overcrowding, creating space for more animals in need.
Lacy DeHorney, CCAS animal services manager, explains that placing pets in a home setting enables the shelter to gather valuable insights into their behaviors that may not be apparent within the shelter environment. "This information, including the animal's training status, interactions with various individuals, and response to common household sounds, is essential for ensuring pets are matched with suitable forever homes."
Prospective fosters need to fill out an application. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside within a 50-mile radius of the shelter, have their resident pets spayed/neutered and current on rabies vaccinations, and have access to email. For individuals fostering a dog, a meeting with any resident dogs is necessary. Additionally, fosters play a role in the adoption process by engaging with potential adopters to facilitate a successful match.
CCAS is always in need of more fosters, Lacy affirms. For those who cannot commit to full-time fostering, the shelter offers a Doggie Day Out Program. This initiative allows individuals to take a dog out for the day, providing a break from shelter life and offering valuable insights into the dog’s behavior. Individuals can apply and note their interest in this program specifically.
Participating as a foster home makes life-saving differences for these animals. By fostering, Lacy says community members help create better futures for these deserving pets.
