Marc Mercier knows what it means to start small. “I started my company in May of 2008, in my garage,” he says, with his wife Sheryl as his partner. He added epoxy garage floors to his business in 2011, and by 2019 they had spun off a separate business, TruTech Concrete Coatings, focusing on a unique concrete coating made from a 100% solid polyuria and polyaspartic material.
Unlike traditional epoxy coatings, polyurea better withstands abrasions, temperature changes, and heavy use, says Marc. “The product we use is very flexible. Over time, epoxy continues to cure and gets more brittle.” Additionally, TruTech’s coatings are slip-resistant, antimicrobial, non-porous, and easy to clean.
TruTech’s concrete coatings can also be stylish, notes Marc. “We can match any color scheme, or even embed a logo in the floor.” Customers choose to coat garage floors most often, says Marc, but polyurea can be applied to any concrete floor. Basements, pool decks, and weight rooms are among the possibilities. “In a weight room, you can literally drop a barbell on it, it is that strong,” he adds.
Most jobs can be completed in one day, instead of the 3-5 days typical of epoxy coatings. “We spend a lot of time on prepping, actually grinding the surface of the concrete instead of just a wash. We fill cracks, and then apply the base coat. Vinyl paint chips in the desired colors are sprinkled on top, and later a clear top coat is added to finish the job," says Marc.
Marc has worked in home improvement his entire career, and that has rubbed off on his sons, two of whom worked with him. He also prides himself on creating a great team at TruTech. “We’ve found great success putting great people around us,” he notes, “and we love helping people get that curb appeal.”
