We spoke with Lucy Small of State & Season about her journey to ownership of State & Season and her passion for helping others create a modern, country life.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a designer who also really focuses on the construction and material selection part of any home or business, because I do both commercial and residential. And I have the only showroom in North Georgia, Southern Tennessee, Western North Carolina, pretty much the entire area that specializes in material selections that are largely high-end imported more for custom homes as well as businesses.
How did you get started?
Having a family and not really wanting to be in a city anymore brought us here and the experience of going through and designing and building our property, because we are very much in an area with unlimited possibilities. People can really imagine what they want and do it. So, I was happy to move from the hustle and bustle of commercial spaces to residential ones because it still had that appeal of every space is different, every space is unique and people are really open to unique materials.
And again, our own personal experience of building here really confirmed that, because I really wanted to create a space that had everything I would have wanted when we were in that process. We spent so much more leg work, time and money to try and figure out what we now offer to people.
What makes State & Season unique?
What makes State and Season unique is that we are not just interior designers who have an office and charge by the hour or by the square foot. We are a comprehensive whole home design studio where people can come in and find everything they need, no matter what point in the project they’re at.
They can see exterior stone and they can see roofing, windows and doors. And if they are further in their build they can find tiles and countertops, cabinets. Or they can come in and get wallpaper, furniture and stuff that is more for finishing a space. It’s the only place you can really see everything all in one space. It’s really meant to take a lot of the stress and intimidation out of the process for homeowners and builders.
