SPENGA is a mix of spin, strength, and yoga. What is the idea behind that trio?
Unlike any studio of its kind, SPENGA combines three essential elements of fitness. Through this combination, each workout is designed to improve endurance, strength, and flexibility to create what’s known as the best workout ever. Each session is limited to 24 clients so the instructor is able to make modifications and stay focused on the group. The sense of community that this group workout provides is unparalleled.
What makes SPENGA different from other fitness studios in Dallas?
This structure differs from that of other studios who either focus all 60 minutes on one activity or break the sessions into different groups who work on different components simultaneously, forcing the coach’s attention to be directed to certain groups during the workout. The addition of 20 minutes of yoga at the end gives the clients an opportunity to recover, gain flexibility and mental/spiritual wellness — that is missing from other programs.
Do you have members signed up already?
We do! The Dallas community has been amazing. One of many perks of being a founding member is the opportunity to use the studio for two weeks free prior to the grand opening. Founding members also get to reserve their membership levels and rates at a 20% discount off the post-opening retail rate. They are already taking advantage of free workouts and fun events intended to build and strengthen our fast-growing community.
Why did you decide to open a fitness studio?
I have more than 20 years of experience in financial services and start-up businesses. I have held executive positions in sales, customer service, quality assurance, vendor management, and servicing operations. I accepted an early retirement package to pursue a longtime goal of owning my own business. My husband has more than 20 years of experience as a technology project manager and has shared my dream of business ownership. We wanted a business that is client-facing — focused on the wellness of the community while providing the tangible and intangible benefits of exercise. SPENGA checks all the boxes.
And what drew you to health and fitness in particular?
I am a cancer survivor. As part of the journey through surgery and chemotherapy, I realized how important a regular fitness routine is in healing both the body and mind. Regular exercise can help strengthen our immune systems and reduce stress. Combine that with the personal connections you form in a boutique fitness environment, and you become stronger.
How is SPENGA safely contributing to physical and mental health during these often-challenging times?
SPENGA’s attention continues to be focused on the safety and wellness of our clients. There are smaller sessions, no sharing of equipment, and equipment sanitization. This has always been a differentiating point with the SPENGA brand, and we have continued to strengthen our safety protocols, including the installation of UV technology to clean and filter the studio air, the use of hospital-grade disinfectants, and electrostatic cleaning processes. SPENGA Uptown has been offering free sessions for the local community, including socially distanced Yoga in the Park. Instructor-led sessions can also be accessed virtually on social media. SPENGA has even partnered with Mindshine, a mental wellness platform that gives our members access to positive psychology, leadership coaching, and mindfulness.
What ambitions do you have for your new studio?
We want to deliver a healthy, successful studio that is a leader in Dallas fitness. We want to create a loyal customer following and foster partnerships that strengthen the community spirit. We strive to improve the physical and mental health of our clients.
