Since opening Tusculum Brewing Company in the former Bergmann Lumber Store, Paige and Tripp Mathews, Operating Partners, have created a space where the community can gather for events, to exchange ideas, hold meetings or be in celebration. The additional ownership team of four and with Tommy Mathews as Managing Partner has made that vision a reality.
With the building being over 110 years old there were plenty of opportunities to show it some much needed love and restoration. Our primary goal when starting was to restore the main floor ceilings to their original elegance and to create a pallet for future improvements and enhancements. With the addition of our BierGarten spaces in back, we have met most of our goals for the space. Our long-term goals have the interior space evolving into more elegant finishes, becoming an area with blended elements of dining/gathering, beer/wine service, and local specialty retail.
COVID made that difficult in 2020, but over the course of 2021 we have been able to live into that goal of community. In a world dominated by instant messaging, conflict, and rhetoric it is our hope that by providing a welcoming space we can in some small way make a positive difference. In life we are either givers or takers. We have been very blessed in life, and it is a critical part of our culture and company credo to give back to the community, those in need, and those who serve.
In 2022, Boerne Radio will be broadcasting from Tusculum. Tommy Mathews was introduced to Baron and Shan Wiley through mutual acquaintances. Their initial conversations about Tusculum’s goals, to be a place for community conversations, resonated and fit within Boerne Radio’s community-centric focus and a strong chemistry was formed. Mathews and the Wileys soon began exploring the possibility for the radio station to set up shop and broadcast from Tusculum. Design plans are underway to make that unique opportunity an exciting reality in 2022.
We have some new IPAs coming out soon and our Lucky 13 stout will be returning to the taps. Tripp and I usually come up with the names with the help of our production team, friends, and family. It is a fun process but it can sometimes be hard to come up with something funny or cool.
Tripp and I started dating in 2013 after we met while attending Texas State University and then got married in 2015. Our space and our business continues to be ever-evolving and we hope for exciting new changes in the new year but we don't have specific details.
The upstairs space consists of two main areas. Roughly half of the space is a living area where the H.O. Adler family, who built the building, resided for many years. The balance of the space is a large open rustic warehouse. Restoration of the former residential areas has begun, as plans for the balance of the space are being finalized. The goal is to create a blend of professional offices, meeting/gathering space, and an exciting, but yet to be announced opportunity. Stay tuned!
